Hi! chaps, another problem.
I read an article that stated the windows defender had problems, and that it was better to use your own anti-virus, I have got Trend
PC-Cillon for my firewall and anti-virus, which does a complete check on startup, and updates every day.
So, I decided to uninstall Defender, but since doing so, I get a message every minute, saying that my computer is infected, and also
a program called ContraVirus v2.0 that says I have 12 infections, which I believe is part on Defender, but if you try to use it, it wants you to buy it.
These two messages are driving me bonkers, as I can't find any way of removing them, it won't even let me re-install defender.
Any help please.hwillett

I don't know what you've been reading and where but in any case M$ designed Windows Defender as a component of Vista itself. You cannot uninstall it. Furthermore, Windows Defender is not antivirus - it's antispyware. Its former name was M$ AntiSpyware.

ContraVirus IS NOT even remotely affiliated with Windows Defender or anything else from M$. You need to be careful about what you install or remove from your system - especially, if you are not familiar with the programs.
Clearly, your system has been compromised because ContraVirus is rougeware. The irony of all this is .... Defender would have prevented that intrusion had you not pulled it. If you need further help on this issue - redirect your inquiries to the security & virus forum on this website.

"I don't know what you've been reading and where but in any case M$ designed Windows Defender as a component of Vista itself. You cannot uninstall it."
I simply assumed he upgraded from XP to VHP which would avail him the ability to uninstall Defender as he would any other program via the control panel.

Thank you chaps for your answers, you've made me look very sheepish, now, how do I get rid of contravirus, and how do I re-install defender,
I have got a new computer with Vista Premium installed, not an XP update, would it help to re-install the Restore disk supplied by Mesh.
I cannot do a system restore, or a backup because of error message Ox800.
I still need some help please.hwillett

Run the MESH CD and put it back to default the day you bought it, and in future do not assume anything without investigation. Google is a good place to find articles.
