Subject: Win XP Pro to Vista UltimateOS: Win XP ProCPU/Ram: 3GHZ/1GB RAMModel/Manufacturer: Dell |
Comment: My computer is a Dell 4600 with 3.0GHZ and 1 GB of Ram with a 128MB video card, I have already run the check to see if Vista would run on my computer and it said it would. Now here is my question, orginally my computer came with XP Home Edition, the only CD I have for XP Home is a Full version CD from Dell, it says Operating system than has the Dell logo under it. I later upgraded to XP Pro, I bought the XP Pro Upgrade since it was cheaper than the Full version. Now When I get "Vista Ultimate Edition" (The Upgrade version) , and I want to do a clean installation will the XP Pro upgrade CD work, when it looks for previous operating systems? I guess I am asking can I do an upgrade to the upgrade? Oh and one more question is there any web sites out there that show the new Vista box? I googled it and I am only getting how it looks on the outside. Thank You, Jesse

Reply: (edit)Upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro was a waste of money. AFAIK, upgrading a previously upgraded OS will not work & I doubt the XP Pro Upgrade CD will qualify for a "clean install" using the Vista Upgrade CD. The XP Home "Full Version CD from Dell" does NOT qualify for a clean install, but it *may* qualify for an in-place upgrade. Vista Business Upgrade is available for just $10.

Reply: (edit)I have not tried it but I think there is no need to install XP first to be able to install Vista using Vista upgrade DVD. Just insert Vista upgrade DVD and boot with it. Some time during installation, Vista will ask you to insert a qualifying media. At that time insert your upgrade XP Pro CD. That's it. Vista should behave the way XP did. Regards suatcini
