Out of curiosity, I downloaded and ran Microsoft's program to see if my computer would be ready for Vista. It came back telling me I had to upgrade my video card. I need 128 MB instead of my present 64 MB and support for Pixel Shader 2.0. I've looked at many video card specs. and I cannot find anything relating to Pixel Shader 2.0 or support for it. Where should I look for this information? Thanks

Support for pixel shader comes standard in many of the new cards, I have a ATI Radeon 9600 and it works just fine. Although I had to update the drivers. If you buy one of the newer cards, you'll be fine, as long as its a 256Mb (256Mb is better than 128Mb because its bigger...duh, and the compared value is higher, in other words, "more bang for your buck")
Good luck.

Correction, 256MB *may* be better...it all depends on the card. More is NOT always better. On a card like the R9600, the 128MB version is usually faster than the 256MB version. This is because the 256MB memory used usually has a higher latency. Always check the specs. Stay away from cards that have a 64-bit memory bus width.

Have a look at this chart...the column on the far right (Features) lists the Pixel Shader (PS)

Thanks for the correction jam, you are right, but I rather go with 256Mb, I really dont know why, but I'll go with it. Its working for me. But if you're on a tight budget, then go with the 128Mb one.

"Stay away from cards that have a 64-bit memory bus width."

Nice, true.

Im using WinVista right now, and it ROCKS!!
But then again, it need a lot of CPU proccessing power.

Good luck to you all. Experience away...

Setting up Vista in a multiboot environment with an older version of Windows is NOT a pain at all.

Your having troubles doesn't mean the majority of those who do so will, if your system meets the recommended requirement you should be fine as far as Vista's installation and subsequent usage goes.

It isn't? I have a half-dead version of Vista now (The one I'm using) and 2 corrupt versions of WinXP, because It couldn't to the BCD boot thing in vista, it just doesn'y support it. Do you know how to modify the BCD file? or how to REMOVE it? thanks (Funny, totally irrelevant)

@ rhs08

Try this to remove Vista's boot menu.

0. Go into folder options

1. Enable "hidden files and folder" & "protected operating system files" options from in there.

2. Look in your (root directory) C: drive for a "Boot" folder & the "bootmgr" file.

3. Delete both the file & folder above and that gets rid of the Vista menu.

Well, I didn't know about VistaBootPro but an easier interface to a laborious solution is always welcomed.

Thanks for that tip.

Actually, I burnt the Vista ISO to a DVD and it won't boot on any of my PC's? Did I do something wrong? I burnt it as an ISO after I unzipped it.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Apparently something must have gone wrong or it should have been bootable.

Why did you have to unzip the file, the correct Beta2 distro came in an ISO format. Maybe your distro is screwed up. All you need to do after getting the correct distro is burn the ISO into a DVD or better - just mount the ISO image using a virtual drive and you won't need to burn it.

My mistake, it was not zipped. I copied it into my DVD writer program and burnt the disc. If I double click on it on my desktop, it opens up my Sonic Record Now program and has browse and says choose the location for the image?
Sorry, I'm stumped on this....any ideas on where I'm going wrong?
Thanks

I don't use Sonic unfortunately, I suggest you download Deamon tools or another utility that will help emulate an optical drive and mount the ISO image. BTW, you do have a DVD burner right?

yes, that is the DVD program and I have 2 burners on my PC. What I said earlier was that I did burn that onto a DVD and it doesn't boot for some reason. I have 3 PC's that I tried it on.

Have you check the ISO file md5 checksum?
here it is:
the md5 for the x86 (32-bit)version is:
0E733AB1A8E8FF9A8684FD3639332773

and the other is(x64, 64-bit):
E43502D0A15EADD551119D5639859E04

and remember to burn the disk AT SLOWEST SPEED POSSIBLE. If checksum not equal, download again with a manager like Getright, it works, really. I had to re-download twice.

List the files that are in the DVD that you burned. (Including hidden)
