When I had XP, in order to get a good volume for my music, I had to turn my volume knob up about 1/3. Now with Vista, I had to turn it up to 1/2 just to get a decent volume. When I turn it up to 1/2 and up, my speakers begin to give off a hiss sound from being too loud. Why is my volume so low? I checked every possible setting in the sound options and cant get it to be loud. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are you plugging into your onboard speaker, or is it a sound card? Break It - Fix It
Make sure you set the master volume higher in Vista's volume control, as Vista now has that (what I personally find a bloody annoying) feature whereby every application has its own volume control.
I'm plugging it into a PCI sound card
Yes, poking up the volume in software might help. You can then lower the volume on the speaker knob to reduce the hiss. I'm suspecting a signal to noise ratio problem. DerekW
I have checked the audio console, and every nook and cranny of the windows setup, but i cant get it up, so far the only way to get the vol up is to turn theknob and increase the speaker hiss
ive already tried it, but the volume is still abnormally low, it was perfect at 1/3 knob volume in XP, but now for some songs i have to crank it up past 1/2 just to get a decent level, and thats when the speaker hiss shows up.
Well, if you've cranked Vista volume up to max then it must be some other issue. I assume XP was on this self same machine previously. In which case, other than a drivers issue I'm out of ideas.
