Specs: Windows Vista, 4 gig
why does my laptop shut down? i have vista, i have reinstalled windows/wiped my hd TOTALLY clean--repartioned my hd to do so. it is a dell laptop so i CANT open it (dell makes their laptops so ONLY dell technicians can open/close them--u cant get the backing on without a specific tool is what my ex said when he killed our laptop, i have the studio 1735 now--ours was the insprion something). i can be on any program (browser, Word, mozilla, antti-virus--tried mcafee, unistalled and have norton) or have nothing open. does it when im plugged in and when i am not. to the right of the mousepad it will get slightly warm and NOT turn off and other times it will--and sometimes when it isnt even close to warm, like after it has been off for hours turn it on, sign in (sometimes b4 windows even gets to load) then off it goes.

when i turn it back on comes up with "safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally" -- there is another option after safe mode and safe mode with networking and i cant remember what it says...i have done safe mode and ran my norton (and previously mcafee) and also did the same in safe mode with networking to update the definitions. i also have a disc with diagnostics ran all the tests and everything "passed". i am really getting frustrated with this....like i said it will do it whenever, doesnt matter if any app is open or not--other than the normal programs that show on the bottom right (such as my mousepad, norton, network connection, sound, and clock)...what can be cauing this??

hardware failure.

one way to test is boot up into the laptops bios. stay there. if it shuts down you have hardware failure. if not odds are there are wrong drivers installed causing the issue.
