Comment: How come we don't get as many post as we do in CN other forums. Does this mean that Vista is trouble-free of problems found in XP, Win 98, Win ME, Linux? i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)Not really..... Vista currently accounts for a meager 3% of the desktop OS share - XP on the other hand accounts for 75%. As the saying goes, the bigger the head ..... the bigger the headache. Anyhow, I think it is premature to expect as much issues as of yet. For one, the OS is arguably more stable than XP. And as hinted above, it has barely caught up with Linux & Mac .... let alone the people's champ aka Windows XP ;-)

Reply: (edit)Vista is perfectly acceptable if one does not buy the basic versions and has a PC Sytem and peripherals which are all designed/compatible, ie anything 2007 or later................ Unfortunately the big retailers are selling underspecced PC's with Vista Home and not explaining to customers that it will be sooo ssslllooowww it is almost unusable. I advice all budget customers to stick with XP.

Reply: (edit)Where to start... I had to wait 3 months before I could find all my drivers and make Vista an O/S that I could use. (Not really a fault of the folks at Redmond by it was a major factor in my considerations for use). Everything seems to run O.K ish and speed isn't really an issue, opens programs just as fast and they function as with XP. so far so good. Major headache no.1 Vista has it's own indexing function to make searches faster ect. However indexing has a hardon precedence factor where it hurts other application speeds ie. if i have my TV working and im watching it, it stops and pauses (burps & sputters). The same happens while watching DVD's. It's very annoying. Solution turn off indexing on all my drives but then this renders the quick search function useless. The information moron balloons I can live without. You'd think that by now Redmond would think we know what all the icons are by now.(Apple doesn't nanny it users) Aero Glass is nice however there are still a multitude of programs that don't accommodate it, so Vista reverts to basic mode as to have them function. My folder settings keep changing which frustrates the heck out of me. Defender is a useless piece of crapware that is hard to remove so i have it disengaged/turned off. Networking is slightly simpler and better managed with rights. WoW factor....who cares can't do anything with it. I'm sure there are more but I’m beat will add to it as they come to mind. Reply: (edit)Of course there are more to it. Even an experienced Softie (M$ developer Andy Pennell) get the Vista installation blues. It began with trying to open the damn Vista box. Read his blog HERE now for a good laugh ... before the higher up force him to take it down for trashing the WoW product that cost M$ millions if not billion to develop and market. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)Oh I forgot to ask one more thing - does anyone remember ... Vista kickoff WoW Aerial Show? ... that took place right in my backyard (NYC). I wonder how much this extravaganza has cost Redmond. Are they recovering the advertising expenses by charging us a lot of money for the OS? i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)"Rebooted again from DVD. It said "Copying files 0%". And there it stayed. I left for half an hour, came back and it had copied files but was at "Expanding files 1%". I went to bed, woke up the next morning expecting to see a shiny new Vista to play with. Instead it said "Expanding files 24%". I thought it had hung, but no: every few minutes the drive would spin up, and every 15 minutes the percentage would go up by 1. I estimated it would take 30 hours to expand the files at this rate, so I left it running all weekend. After a total of about 40 hours, I saw a login prompt." The above has fluke written all over it. I've been with Windows long enough to know when something beyond the norm is happening. I am not going to accept the above as a Vista flaw.

Reply: (edit)I am not going to accept the above as a Vista flaw. In that case the M$ developer may now have a lot to worry about. M$ can be very ruthless. The higher up can use it against him in his annual employee performance appraisal in the same way they threaten its own MVP. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)I agree Saber, on reading that article I had to laugh - and all I was thinking was, "That's one sh*t, crocked computer you've got there..." - definitely no fault of Vista's, and so no basis to use it as a slur against the operating system. Mine was installed and up and running in well under an hour!

Reply: (edit)A very funny moment in Steve Job’s keynote speech which can be seen by the way at apple.com was at the 1hr 5 min mark where he discloses pricing for Leopard OS 10.5. “Leopard Basic will cost $129.00, Leopard Premium will cost $129.00, Leopard Business will cost $129.00 and Leopard Ultimate will cost $129.00 we at apple feel buyers will be buying for Ultimate”....LOL Granted the keynote had poked some fun at M$ but that’s nothing more than healthy rivalry banter from the kitten company whose total market share barely makes 8% as opposed to M$ who owns something in the order of 82%. I run 3 O/S systems (M$, Mac and Linux Sabayon) and have a simple ftp scripting program which syncs my mac units with windows. My primary system of use is the Mac which was a conscientious decision based on platform stability (not hardware) So far to date my experience has been nothing short of fantastic from the point of ease of doing things without compromising performance. I can’t remember when I have ever said “gee this program i’m running is hogging my resources.” And i’m a real power user on every platform. I did this purely out of choice and have never regretted it. There is absolutely nothing on the MS platform that i can’t do on the Mac. There are plenty of freeware/shareware programs that accommodate my needs and major programs have mac versions. In addition i also run Vista Business on my macbook pro with the use of parallels. (I need this functionality for network troubleshooting and client support) but do very little else in it. My main machine at home runs an AMD duel core 5200+ with an Nvidia 8800GTS video card. This machine is no slouch however running Vista Business gives me grief and heart burn whilst doing some rather simple tasks albeit CPU intensive. The amount of times it stalls, burps and stutters is frustrating all the while remembering XP sp2 never gave me such issues and for the most part worked quite well considering the years of refinement knowledge I had amassed. I personally believe M$ has done something wrong at the heart of this O/S which is really stifling it’s true potential. I have no answer for it but I have a deep suspicion it has to do with sloppy code, drm handling, background task handling and the way the O/S hits the HDD is so relentlessly which can only mean those with half done disk drives will suffer big-time when they die prematurely because of the read write increase rate, thankfully I invested in high end 10K spin raptors as my primary mirrored drives, no real guarantee but better than the average 7200 spin barracudas with a couple of years of wear under the belt. Reply: (edit)I run three OS' as well - Linux, Vista & XP. I try as much as possible to avoid the Apples vs Oranges smackdown fanatism. This is simply because all OS' suck - one way or the other - no matter how well intended the design is. Unfortunately, Mac system don't work for me at home for basically two reasons, gaming & hardware customization. When that ceases to be a serious drawback - I'll be glad to check in with Steve about the possibility of building my own Mac systems. But until that time, I remain a hapless WGA peon. I use Macs infrequently outside the house & I'm not that naive or ignorant to know that you can accomplish much on those pretty looking things too. However, there are territories strongly marked by each of the above OS' that can't be denied. As far as Office productivity suite & gaming goes - Windows easily pulls well ahead of Linux & Apple. But when it comes to Networking, specifically as it relates to Enterprise Servers - Linux has the advantage over the other two. And arguably, Mac OS is by far the preferred environment for professionals extensively involved in multimedia projects like video, photo and sound editing. Ultimately, what is at stake determines where each individual will stand & what OS they will go for. However, Windows doesn't have to worry about OSX or Linux for the foreseeable future, because those two aren't going to be coming that close to be viewed as considerable threats to Redmond.
