Comment:

When upgrading from XP Pro to vista, will I need an original XP Pro disk? I have an OEM version that came with my PC and no disk, if I wish to do a clean install how will it know I previously owned a version of windows?

Cheers.

Typically, upgrade CD's in the past have required you to insert a CD from a previous operating system to prove that you were upgrading. For example, during setup, Windows XP upgrade would require a 98, 2000 upgrade CD to be inserted to prove you were owner of a previous Microsoft operating system. Special versions are also available for 95, although it is hard to believe that anything running 95 would be capable of running XP.

If you are doing an upgrade like a OS to OS upgrade then no, all you need is an XP OS that is currently on your pc. But this process is not advised. You're much better off buy a full version and doing a clean install or else you'll be asking for trouble with odd errors preformance slowdowns etc.. that you will get if you install another OS ontop of an older one.

"Clean install. With this method, you boot the PC from the Windows Vista install DVD, run interactive Setup, format the PC's hard drive, and install Windows Vista as the only OS. This is probably the rarest way to get Vista on a PC. You can use a "Full" or "Upgrade" retail version of Windows Vista to perform a clean install, though you will need "qualifying media"--typically a Windows XP or 2000 CD that proves you qualify for the Upgrade version."
