"should I let the computer update vista everyday?" Personally, I don't like automatic updates at all. I prefer to update manually on a weekly basis. However, the critical updates are important and you might want to leave the updating on automatic-but I would suggest less frequently than every day-how about weekly ? What is probably happening is the update process is installing ALL possible updates, such as for drivers, etc., and not just the critical ones. I think it is much better to install optional updates manually, if at all, and preferably one at a time as well.

Normally, that would be the way to go. However, most folks tend to take extra precaution & for understandable reasons too. On this machine, I have Vista's update routine configured to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" ... that way, I can install the downloaded update(s) without having to manually download it or decline the installation if for some inexplicable reason I have to.
