Hi ... I'm using XP pro now and I am happy with this OS , it does everything I need for now . My question is I see Vista upgrade is so cheap now and I am thinking of getting it . I have the specs for it but I am curious to know if it will be a good move or not ? Is there any problems with the Upgrade version ? It comes with sp1 . Thanks

It all depends on what you want, xp is by far faster than vista. If you do want to make that step I recommend backing up all your files to a external, and not doing a in place upgrade, do a fresh install of vista. Directions listed below.

I don't think that xp is always by far faster than Vista. I find Vista to be faster in many cases-it depends on your hardware configuration and what programs you are using. You could compare them yourself if you do a dual boot-I like Vista Boot Pro. Also look at

Based solely on the statement above, I would suggest you stick with XP or at best, go for a dual-boot & not an in-place upgrade; since your sights are on Ultimate.

This plan allows you -- for lack of a better term -- to wean yourself from XP, while trying to embrace Vista. And if you end up not getting along with Vista, you can go back to XP & forget about Vista or maybe resume (Vista) where you left off at a much later date, if you so desire!

I agree with Saber. Stick with XP because for right now, you may be disappointed with Vista because of its speed, and perhaps the behaviour of some applications. I agree that Vista is faster in some areas than XP (thinking about the redone Start Menu), but for the most part, XP is still on top (in my opinion) as far as speed. I believe Vista will improve over upcoming service packs, when at that time you may consider upgrading.

I have been using Vista since before its beta days & it was even horrendous back then, not only was the code unfinished, the accompanying hardware -- common at the time -- were not at par with what was needed to adequately handle the OS. Things have changed today & top of the line components commensurate with Vista expediency are now available & quite easier to afford; even on a conservative budget.

It is in light of the above, that I sometimes think more than a few folks out there are not really considering perhaps a crucial underlying factor when contrasting XP to Vista in terms of speed.

A moderately configured XP machine is significantly sub-par to an equivalent Vista machine, but very few people take that into account when pitting XP (with all Service Packs) against Vista with or without a Service Pack.

Maybe not an exact analogy, but if you ask me who is going to have the edge in a 100m dash or a non-guerrilla warfare? A 1940s GI equipped with roughly 35 pounds of standard combat gear, or a 75 pounds or more carrying modern combat troop - it shouldn't be a surprise if the GI has the advantage lead. However, if you had to choose who to enlist for modern combat; you are going to quickly look beyond the GI's collateral agility & go with the heavier dude with the "smart gear."

In short: don't be surprised if XP is faster than Vista on an XP "ready" or Vista "capable" machine - it should be!

XP SP3 vs. Vista SP1 - Which is fastest?

I hope you don't plan on upgrading vista ontop of xp. You should always perform a clean install to avoid any problems. I always say if you are going to upgrade to a newer OS do it right and that is do a clean install.
