I agree with PoweredUp, the more I use Vista, the more I hate it. It's unstable, too slow, too ugly, too big, too expensive, and too incompatible. MS sure got it right when they said "The WOW starts here." All I can say is Wow because of all of the things I hate about it.

To answer the OP's question, the easiest way to do it is back up your important stuff to a CD/DVD, then boot your PC with the XP CD in the drive. You may have to change the boot order in the BIOS. Then when you get to the partition selection, just format your existing Vista partition and install XP to it.

Vista is the new Win ME.

Most of the major magazines and other reviewers agree.

Vista is a big, expensive, incompatible and overly hyped OS.

First off the Version of XP may not pass WGA when installed on the newer PC, you may have to buy XP!

Secondly did you bother to use the search function as this subject has been regugitated several times recently...

Last but not least why did you buy a Compaq, you should of got your local PC Guru to build a PC with XP !!

I have ran Vista for a year now ever since the RTM was released and although it reminded me of Windows Me at first, the updates have improved Vista and in some cases by a lot. I haven't ran into any real problems with Vista personally, because all my drivers and software support it fully, except for my 7 year old webcam, but it had trouble supporting XP too even in compatiblity mode, but I hardly ever use it, so no big deal.

Other than UAC which was my main complaint espcially when it prompts you to even accept or deny Microsofts own products when activated, Vista has been good to me. I see service pack 1 making it even better. For computers less then 2 years old that have 1gb of ram or more, that use software less then 2 years old, then in most cases Vista works fine with it. I even got some programs that are 4 years old working fine with Vista and even gotten a AMD k6-550mhz, 512mb of ram and a Geforce 5200 card, with 20gb hard drive to run ok with Vista on it minus all special Vista features.

Vista isn't a bust, it's a good OS for anyone using fairly a new pc and a fairly new software.

These are the specs you provide:

OS: windows
CPU/Ram: do not know
Manufacturer/Model: Compac

If you are a quick learner you should "learn" what your CPU/Ram is because that may be why your system is slow an cumbersome.

Oh and the make is Compaq with a "Q"

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Personally I feel going back to XP is a wise choice.

If you own the CD and a valid serial you should be able to install it on another machine, if it complains, call MS and MS should reset the serial. If that fails and you own XP, look up a serial for it, it isnt piracy in my book if you already own it.

Going back to XP, either format the HD and re-install XP from the CD, or del the vista folder and install XP over top.

You should'nt have to explain your actions for going back, Vista is crap.

Why not dual boot?
I tried it and it is not too difficult.
I used this link:
http://apcmag.com/5023/dual_booting...

Personally I like vista, and if we like it or not, it will be the ms software we all will be using in the future, not?

(edited message for correcting a typo :)

Not. I still may use XP even when Vista has matured because I don't have hardware to run it decently. It demands too many resources, and is 20 times slower than XP on the same hardware. I have a PC that has Vista and XP dual booted, and it takes about 2 minutes to boot Vista. XP? 25 seconds.

Hi RWD1996, (response nr 12)

No offence, but I mean where the industry will go to.
In a few more years it will all be vista,
because from august 2008 (if i'm right) XP will not be sold anymore. And companies upgrade their computers +- each 3 years, and they will have vista on it.
(The computers we sell here, are now 50% vista's)

Anyway, to stay on topic, dual boot i would say, everybody happy.
If vista is too slow, buy a new computer or stick to xp, which is designed for older computers...

Hey there Benjamin J and darkclow. I certainly don't mean any offence either, just happily stating my opinion. Yes I do use MS products, in fact, I prefer Windows over Linux. But I doubt that I'll ever use Vista. Even though XP is made for older computers, it's still a highly capable operating system, and will run circles around Vista on any new computer. There to me is no reason why Vista has to use 350MB of RAM on idle when it basically only does what XP does and XP sits at around 140MB on idle. Microsoft has focused to heavily on eye candy in Vista and seems *to me* that MS has had less regard for the true purpose of a computer. I can't understand how you, darkclow, can think that I lied. I said that I probably won't use Vista at all, just XP. I never said I was going to stop using Microsoft products altogether. All 4 of us in my family currently use Vista on the family pc and none of us like it anymore. I'm thinking about taking Vista off of it altogether.

Feel free to disagree, I'm not upset, I'm just stating how I personally feel.
