When I log into Windows Vista, I get an error: (42)Startup Error. Restart the application. If the problem persists please contact techincal support. How can I find out what app is causing the error?

Can you check what applications are trying to start when you start Windows ?
You can check the startup applications with Windows Defender built into Windows Vista.
Start Windows Defender and then click Options. There you will find Startup applications.
Then you can make a comparison of applications found there with applications already running in Task Manager. The one application found in Windows Defender's startup applications group that does not take place in Task Manager is the culprit application you are looking for.
Hope my explanation is satisfactory.
