Comment:

If you are thinking of buying Vista software or machine preinstalled with Vista - put your plan on hold.

Chronology of a very swift event:

Feb 28, 2007 -
There is no Vista SP1 in the work - declared M$ CEO Ballmer.

June 9, 2007 -
Google complaint to U.S. DOJ (U.S. Dept of Justice) about Vista desktop search.

June 11, 2007 -
Various States contemplated joining Google antitrust suit.

June 15, 2007 -
Google complaint is baseless - declared M$$ CEO Ballmer.

June 19, 2007 -
M$ Agreed to modify Vista OS over Google complaint - declared U.S. DOJ

I believe SP1 will be a major revision to the OS just like IE7 was to XP.

MS must be out of touch with themselves.

Quoted from NY Times article published today:

In a recent interview, Bradford L. Smith, the general counsel at Microsoft, said that the new operating system was carefully designed to work well with software products made by other companies, and that an independent technical committee had spent years examining Vista for possible anticompetitive problems before it went on sale.

Who were the "independent technical committee?" I guess no one other than Einy, Meeny, Miny and Moe.

IMO Vista has gotten too much of a bad rap from a lot of people to consider using it even after a SP1.

I mean in ME's final days it turned out to be ok after all the billions of patches that came out for it, but it was way too late for people to change their minds about ME. I in the pc world first impressions can mean everything.

What's with Google - I like Vista's instant search because it works for me & not necessarily because M$ made it readily available to me in Vista. Although it facilitated my trying it out as opposed to downloading & installing Google's desktop tool.

Ultimately, the utility's proximity is not an overbearing advantage. For example, WMP has been an integral part of Windows sans the EU version for a while now & most users don't use it as their preferred media player, similar goes for web searches.

Hi regulars;

XpUser I can't even start with my issues with Vista since I was forced to buy a new computer. In my opinion an SP1 update should have been released before the actual operating system.

As far as program compatibility goes they must be out of touch. For instance Microsoft Office 2000 Pro is still supported by Microsoft but it won't work with Vista.

If they can't get there own supported products to work with Vista then any claim to other products does not carry much weight with me. Besides even good, recent long time products often won't work as I found out.

Office and security programs seem to be my major issues so far. Does Microsoft have a vested interest in these?

Cobra_R I loved ME after it was tweaked and updated. I'm with you. But I had to move on. XP I could live with. It was slightly different but I could still customize and program compatiblity was never an issue.

Sabertooth no offence because I admire everything you post but I hate the new search functions.

Good for basic searches but a real pain and slower for system searches. Sure I can use it but I find it a pain. And the all in one search functions I have no need of. Not a good trade off in my opinion.

To everyone;
I'm new to Vista. Only had it for two months. So likely I haven't figured out much. But so far I am not impressed.

I'm not outright bashing it. I'm just stating a few of my hundreds of opinions so far.

RandyL

None taken RandyL,

As far as Vista goes, I've extolled & critiqued the dang OS on different occasions depending on the feature being discussed. Moreover, after well more than a year now into my RTM installation, I can tell ya; I've seen the really good & the not so endearing side of the OS. And to be honest, the merits of the OS far outweigh its much chastised demerits, which is in & of itself - a normal consumer outcry. Admittedly, I will state that I was burned by one of its infamous characteristics too .... cough .... discarded AIO X125

Interestingly, we had a Vista pollyanna that seem to have gone AWOL now, that would have disagreed with virtually every comment (this thread included) unless it praised Vista but that just ain't me.

Ironically, today marks one year that the Vista forum made its debut on CN ..... how time flies!

I think I will have to wait LONGER for Vista SP1. The one that M$ will pass out this year will be in beta form. Never again will I turn any of my PCs into Guinea Pigs to the delights of M$.

HERE is the full DOJ's Joint Status Report on M$'s Compliance with the Final Judgment, dated June 19, 2007

BTW M$ better behave before the next status conference scheduled for June 26 this year. Let's hope they will not think they are invincible & above laws as they do with the EU Commission.

Good lord. Vista is becoming one big mess after another. If there were some serious stability issues with Kernel 6 and MS knew about this prior to Vista's launch, then why did they even bother to release Vista in the first place early this year? It would have saved them headaches not to mention more time to get things right. I mean, MS could have waited until the end of this year for Vista's release when Windows Server 2008 comes out with kernel 6.1. That way they both would have came with the same revamped kernel.

I have notice a nice diff in stability with Windows Server 2008 beta using kernel 6.1 then I do with Vista using Kernel 6. Sad, that a beta is more stable then a finished product.

This is what happens when you put money over quality and MS is paying for it.

So far my Vista experience has been a good one. (But then again, I liked my ME computer, so what do I know :).

The only problem I have run into with Vista are vendors not having Vista compatible versions of their software available. Some not even attempting to get their software Vista compatible.

For all the diehard XP people who have gotten used to XP and cant let go of it. Vista is here. Its on just about every new computer. Get used to it. Gonna have to sooner or later anyway.

Have ya'll checked out Microsoft Surface.

Not really the next version of windows is set to be released as soon as Q4 of 2009. People using XP won't have to upgrade to Vista if that becomes the case considering XP will be supported through the 2009 year up until the next version of Windows.

So as you can see XP isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The company put out a call for beta testers to start testing SP1 back on 23rd January -- before Vista was actually released to home users.

mmm??
