When i shutdown machine, it does not gracefully shutdown. It shows a blue blank screen and switches off. The machine automatically restarts after that and prompts saying that the machine was unexpectedly shutdown.

Try booting up in afe mode and then shut down and see if it shut downs properly, if it does then you have a driver problem that is causing it to shut down improperly.

I suspect there's a background application that Windows is unable to properly terminate in order to complete the shutdown routine.

If you disable your (MSCONFIG) startup list -- does it shutdown properly? That could clue you in.
