I am planning on purchasing a laptop with Vista installed. I have heard in various publication and internet news that the Vista OS will fill all the security holes that users of preveous OS's have installed ancillary programs such as AV, anti-spy, anti-ad, etc for.
What should I do after I purchase the laptop with Vista?William Lockie

For every security hole closed, another is open, no matter what.
If I were you I would get a good virus protection program, a good firewall program, and a good spyware program.
Just my opinion.
...if it ain't broke, then you ain't having fun...

Pretty much the same thing you did with XP and much of the previous Windows OS' flavors prior to Vista - you install the applicable supplemental security utilities.

"I have heard in various publication and internet news that the Vista OS will fill all the security holes"
wishful thinking :-)
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

You must have heard it straight from the mouth of M$. Don't forget, XP was also touted as being ultra secure.

Windows Vista: It's More Secure, We Promise

VISAT has Windows defender (the old one) and firewall. You need good Anti-Virus program such as NOD32 from ESET and every thing works fine.

Surfing the internet without an AV is like a playboy stripped naked walking into a maximum security prison no matter what OS you’re using.

Windows Vista does have Windows Defender for anti-spyware and anti-adware, but that's not even come close to the best one out there, even the free ad-aware and spybot search and destroy. Better than nothing, though. Still, I'd get something better.
The firewall is actually pretty good in Vista. It does both inbound and outbound filtering, which is a good thing. Many people surf with SOHO routers, which takes care of 99% of the reasons why you should have inbound filtering, but outbound filtering is still something that everyone should have. XP's firewall was missing that; Vista's has it. Sure there are better software firewalls out there, but the Windows one is probably good enough for most users.
Windows does have better security overall, but that doesn't mean you should skip installing anti-virus. In fact, Vista's Security Adviser still considers lack of AV software a critical vulnerability, so you definitely should install one. Even Microsoft recommends you do so. ;-)
Other security musts: log in with a limited user account, and only use accounts with administrative privileges when needed. Also, set your IE security for the Internet zone to high to disable browser scripting by default, and add sites you trust to the Trusted Sites zone as needed.
"Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion!
Hats off & applause to rogues & evolution!
The ripple effect is too good not to mention.
If you’re not affected, you’re not paying attention!"
