Vista Product Validation key is not readable

Hi Folks, this is bizarre. About 16 months ago I bought a new Toshiba 1500 laptop - basically a bottom end computer price wise. It had a one year warranty which is now expired. It came preloaded with Win Vista. I've since discovered, and read, that a problem with this computer is major overheating.(My screen also now has a white area in the lower left corner that I understand is from overheating) It has a very poor ventilation \ fan system. So what has happened is that the stickers underneath - both the Toshiba product sticker and the Microsoft sticker are now unreadable. They are not burnt off per se, but they are now just gray \ white with heat damage and unreadable. All I can read on the Microsoft one is that it says "proof of license" and the rest is gone. My system is legally validated. I want to do a fresh install. Is there anyway I can get that # off of my computer itself, not just on the bottom. Because the computer came preloaded I don't have the Vista OS on an external disk. Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
