Comment:

i've tried to upgrade to vista today and all goes extremely well (completed upgrade adviser ok) but when i restart, i get big ugly bluescreen. the error states that i need to run CHKDSK /F (i have NO F:drive!)

I have scoured the tinterweb and the problem may be caused by active antivirus software running ( I use AVG Free )... so.. i will disable that , and my Zonealarm firewall and try again... failing that...

I'm currently migrating all my files from a second hard drive and i may have to do a fresh install on that one, leaving my WinXP installation intact. A bit of a bummer tho due to the effort it's going to take setting up my system again, this really should have just upgraded without a problem...

i hope disabling the antivirus will fix this. ;)

How can you say "all goes extremely well"? It sounds like a mess to me...lol.

You should read this article comparing XP vs Vista performance. It also lists software/games that work with Vista, & some that don't:

"There are some types of software that you should only use if they have been specifically designed for Windows Vista: firewalls, anti-spyware and anti-virus software needs to be Vista-Ready."

At present Zone Alarm is a red flag. If you ran the Vista Rediness Test before upgrading it would tell you that there are problems with Zone Alarm. I would uninstall it and go to run. Type in chkdsk and see if that will do a fix on your system. I ran across a article that lists all programs that are known to work with Vista, those that can be made to work, and those that won't. Zone Alarm is on the list that won't. I will look it up and post back. Have to do your research before you do this. Keep reading this site. There are lots of really knowledgeable people that can help.
