If you have a lot of programs that are not compatible with Vista, I don't think anyone sympathetic to your situation will admonish you for reverting back to XP, it's not an illogical thing to do & besides - that's absolutely your call & no one else's.

However, if you can list for example the name of programs that you seem to be having compatibility problems with we may be able to offer some Vista tips that could help you as a workaround - you just never know.

Stay with it mainly because your notebook came with Vista preinstalled. Were you to wipe clean it in order to install XP, you may have difficulties finding & getting drivers that are proprietary to HP/Compaq.

Proprietary drivers generally are not distributed or uploaded as standalone drivers for anyone to download & use as they see fit.

It is Not worth the aggravation.

You can also potentially use a virtualization product and setup XP within Vista to run those apps that won't work in the meantime.

Virtual PC 2007 is free.

I have a *really* hard time accepting the above as a blanket statement. C'mon XpUser, with the wide majority of these VAR/OEMs what is so "propietary" about their systems most of the time does not extend beyond the logo. Across manufacturers, a lot of their white boxes are slapped together within the same expansive warehouse somewhere in an industrial district in Southeast Asia....................LOL

Moreover, retail OS' have been available to PC end users for as long as I can remember. And on this note, I seriously doubt XP drivers (propietary or not) are going to be as elusive as you implied for the OP to find. However if the OP is interested in keeping the oxymoronic "guaranteed OS support" intact it all makes sense to find a workaround to these "undisclosed" compatibility issues in Vista.

The existence of said drivers is one thing. Locating them is something wholly different. And sometimes reference drivers for a hardware product don't work with versions of products included in OEM versions of the products for the likes of Dells, etc.

I agree with XpUser on this.

The fact that some people find it hard to locate things on the internet doesn't elevate resourceful web searches to the rocket science realm, what is usually missing is determination & clear focus. For me if it's out there & I need it - chances are I'll locate it. And in the case of this notebook, the exercise seem to be a walk in the park.

We can all agree to disagree. But it's inaccurate to assert as a blanket statement that "proprietary drivers generally are not distributed or uploaded as standalone drivers for anyone to download & use as they see fit.".......end users do have download access to propietary drivers.

I've done plenty of searches for drivers on the web, and I'm exceptionally adept at finding what I need. I'm not the average user, who would probably have a harder time finding what they need, and even you suggested "chances are" you'll find what you need, not that there's a certainty you'll find them. So for the average user, I don't think, just as XPUser suggested, it's a good idea generally speaking.

In this case, it does appear the drivers are available. However, I still don't think it's a good idea reverting back to XP when he already has Vista, he has vendor support with Vista, he probably has software bundled on his system that he'd lose(such as CD/DVD burning software, or a bundled DVD player, etc.).

All this with the looming reality that he'll need to go to Vista eventually, and apps today that don't work may work tomorrow as applications and Vista are patched.

I'd suggest instead focusing on trying to get his apps to work with Vista instead.

Could always try running the desired programs in Compatibility Mode.
