Hi, i recently installed windows vista and im having problems with the sound. I have a fatal1ty motherboard (going to list specs later down) with Realtek high definition drivers. i installed the windows vista latest drivers they provide on the website, but no luck. On the icon in the bottom right, it shows movement say if im watching a video (on the SPDIF) but no sound comes out. It will not allow me to install the AC'97 audio, it just sits on that "allow to publish etc.." Im pretty good with computers, so if any help can be provided that would be great.

Did you install the chipset drivers from the disc that came with the motherboard? If you did not do that I suggest you do that first.
Secondly, if there is an audio console utility that came with the disc -- from where you configure the integrated sound -- you should install that as well.
I looked at your motherboard & it is equipped with AudioMAX package. Also are your speakers analog or digital & are the audio settings configured that way?

Well the disk for my motherboard isnt new, they were made before vista even came out, should i still try to install them?
Also when i click the sound playback i see two things. 1 says "Speakers, high definition audio device, not plugged in" and 2 "Digital output device (SPDIF) High definition audio device, working then a check mark.
Also i havent heard about his audiomax package, is there someplace i can download it?

Well i installed my friends presario drivers for vista for Realtek High def sound and now it detects my speakers and the slider bar moves, but still not sound. Any ideas?
EDIT: I uninstalled the driver, restarted, windows redected it and reinstalled. I then went to my speaker config, and noticed sound. Right now i only have surrond and left ear, and it doesnt work in games and videos, but random beeping and stuff works. Any ideas?

What type of surround speakers -- 2.1, 5.1, 7.1?
Also, are you using the Realtek HD Audio Manager to configure the speakers or something else.

I dont use surround speakers, i just use a headset, but i guess thats what the computer recongizes it as. All of this works in windows xp, i have a dual boot going.
My choices are
1. Stereo (no sound when used)
2. Quadraphonic (no sound when used)
3. 5.1 Surround - Sound present in central, and sub speaker (there is chart showing a person in middle, then above him a left, center, right, then below hima RL and a RR)4. 7.1 Surround - Same as the 5.1 surround sound
The only sounds i hear are like beeps from xfire, or beeps from google talk, but no physical sound. I am using windows vista to configure, realtek doesnt provide many options.

A headset unit should work like a pair of desktop speakers.
Make sure you are plugged in all the way into the lineout jack & go into the "Realtek HD Audio Manager" to configure the output settings for two speakers.

After playing around with some settins, i was able to hear other peoples mics while playing halo 2, but no in game sound. I think it could be because of not have the "base" AC'97 drivers, that may provide basic sounds. I can still hear xfire beeps, gmail beeps, and now halo 2 mic sounds, but not youtube or halo 2 in game. Thanks
