Vista HP 6730b laptop is not booting

January 4, 2011 at 08:00:07
Specs: Windows Vista, Intel(R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU P8400/2048 MB RAM

My hp 6730b laptop is not booting .I notice when i run diagnostic test. The test keeps failing. The error displayed is Short DST -failed and then the following error code is displayed- OSMP3F-GFX5BD-XD6XGJ-6OQLO3. I can't afford to run HPrecovery because i have information that i can not afford to lose on it. I am unable to log in as a system administrator because the system keeps telling me i have the wrong password when i know i do.My system did not come with a windows installer cd. I have tried to create a booting cd and changing the booting order on the bios of my system ,but i notice that cd booting does not excist in the core booting options.I have also tried to create a booting USB....but in creating that one of the steps is that you copy files from a windows installer CD . I have tried to create the windows installer cd but it didn't work.I noticed that when i put in the USB without completing the installation.my system attempted to boot from the USB was unable to.

... how old is the hard drive?

... make sure the connection to the harddrive is firm and pushed home!

... DST Short Status is short for Drive Self-service Test

... bootup with vista dvd to command prompt << click!

... (type) chkdsk C: /F [press enter]

... your drive may be failing chkdsk should let you know! (or even fix it!)

... did you try booting off cd ( #5 above method?)
.................^^^ please try this first ... ^^^
*********************************************************
... ok for usb there is this (but you'll still have to find a way to incorporate the iso)

... or this one without your "iso" (click >>) #11 should work! (?)

... (you'll still have to do #5 to select usb as boot device <F9> <key>)

Thanks again you have been so helpful. i am sorry my above post wasn't very clear.I guess i was just soo tired.

i'll list out the problems i encountered here:

(1)I downloaded the windows vista repair torrent file to my in-laws laptop, but since it was not in an ISO readable format i donloaded an applicant (Final torrent) that i thought i could use to open the file in an .iso extension format. i noticed that i could view the .iso file format in the view screen of the application ,but i couldn't copy it out of there to my desktop.

(2)I wanted to do (1) above to get it in the format that could be used by the imgburn application(i.e.another application that i had to download from the internet) . The imgburn application was to be used to burn the windows vista repair iso image unto my dvd......but ofcourse i never got to do that because i wasn't able to achieve the intended objective of (1) above.

i am sorry to that i kind of mixed things up in my last post.......Thanks for all your help.

"...i am sorry to that i kind of mixed things up in my last post..."

... your post above does'nt help, now you've lost me!

... the iso (Private Message Center #3) was in a zip file, extract the iso from the zip to a folder

... then burn the iso image with imgburn to dvd ( Its a bootable vista repair only version, why would you want to open it?)

......PS......you can burn the image onto cd as its 120MB only

Dear mavis, I am not sure what i am missing here but the link you provided -http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ doesn't download in a zip file format. It downlloads in a vista repair torrent file format -Windows Vista 32-Bit (x86) Recovery Disc Torrent (this is how it appears on the site). I just noticed that winzip was not installed on inlaws system so i just installed that ,but the file still has the same .torrent extension -Windows Vista 32-bit Repair Disc.torrent

I have read through the posts above and tried several things but i haven't made progress. As i previously said it appears my cd drive has issues so i can't boot from there because that option never comes up when i go to f9 even when the drive is loaded. I tried downloading the hiren thing. I got stuck at the 4th stage -Step 4
Copy grldr and menu.lst (from HBCD folder) to the usb drive.

Event though everything seemed to have installed seamlessly up until then...i couldn't find the grldr file and the menu.1st file i found didn't appear to be in the specified format. Also no HBCD folder was automatically created........Kindly help

"...Also no HBCD folder was automatically created..."

... one has to download Hirens.BootCD then extract content (zip) to a folder.

... there are many ways to extract files/folders from the "iso"

... you seem to be misreading skipping parts in the posts so I'm going to make it easier for you. Place a blank CD into the cdwriter then click/open BurnToCD.cmd
(may take a few attempts)

... after burning the CD (worth keeping!) you'll find the folder "HBCD" (on the CD)

... you should now be able to continue.

... remember it say's (#7 above) "without" your "iso".

(when you bootup off your usb device select mini xp then start> programs> check disk)

Stuck again . I successfully created the hirens boot cd and attempted copying the HBCD folder to my usb.......About 1 min 25secs to the completion of the copy process macafee alerts that there is a trojan in the combo.exe file being copied and i need torestart the computer i.e specific error -detected Artemis! 539CA2CCP4F quarantined from: E:\HBCD\Wintools\combofix.exe to solve the problem.I pick the option restart computer later ,but no more progress is made on the copy process so i am forced to restart immediately. I restart inlaws laptop and start copy again ....i notice error again and also notice a message - " File on this dvd drive are read only. You can not move or delete files on this drive.Combofix.exe" ,but i notice it it has already copied all the vital files unto the USB.

I therefore try to boot my HP from the USB. The errors displayed are as follows:

No grldr
bootmgr is missing
NTFS35:No grldr
Fat 32: No grldr

E.T.C.. i am surprised because the grldr and menu.ist files were actually copied. Inlaw tells me he copies unto and off these cds all the time eventhough i notice its a DVD-R.
hhm ...i'll be so glad when this is all over.

... did you copy the "grldr" file and the "menu.1st" file from out of the HBCD folder to the usb device as stated on that web page as shown here?

...sorry I am not responsible for any trojans from the download but some of the files on the cd are used for certain purposes so you will have some false positives!

... read .... think ... do!

....... (perhaps disable the antivirus whislt copying from cd to usb)

When i try to boot from USB on HP.The error it now displays is -" Remove disks or other media press any key to restart" .As soon as i press a key it goes back to the windows startup repair window and then i am compelled to click the "finish button, which shuts down my system. ... you can normally disable antivirus by right clicking its icon on the tray bar options, I only asked you to do this during the copying process.

... just out of interest see if it''ll bootup with the harddrive removed.

... flip it over so the back is face up (same when you checked that the drive was inplace #1)

... refer to manual: Download (replacing a harddrive)

Hi,

If the battery of the HP laptop is not in a good condition, sometimes booting problems might happen. To remove any static charges accumulated in the battery, you would have to remove the battery and press the Power button for about 25-35 seconds. Then reset the battery. Even after this, if your laptop is not booting up then you could perform the battery calibration and press F8 key to boot in safe mode.

Hope this information helps you.
