Awfully slow, unless minimum 1GB Memory, 256MB Graphics Card and latest CPU's are present.

IMHO XP does everything most people need.

I'm running Vista Ultimate by way of a clean install and I am loving it.

Seems faster and more responsive then XP. Of course the clean install might contribute to this.

It's a lot nicer looking then XP too.

I turned off UAC almost from day one since it's a big pain in the butt.

I've got Ultimate as well & it's alright ..... had a couple of hiccups here & there but nothing major other than the fact that it totally condemned my all-in-one Lexmark X125 - no native drivers for it & Lexmark isn't keen on releasing a Vista compatible driver for the printer.

Fortunately my next door neighbor recently upgraded his printer & gave me his old HP laserjet & I managed to get that going in Vista albeit after manually hunting down all sorts of .dll, hlp, & ppd files on the web - but it worked ;-)

Vista is OK but it's not a fundamentally different Windows. I use my XP machine far more than I do with Vista.

From my experience with Vista, I'm not a big fan of it for these reasons.

Compatibly issues, bugs, and over excessive security features like UAC makes my Vista experience not so very WOW to say the least. It's pretty bad when UAC prompts you to allow or deny even MS's own products! I'm sticking with the tried and true XP for a while to come.

Some of what this guy points out in Vista's flaws I whole heartedly agree with.

Isn't that funny Saber. MS has native driver support for an 8 year old lexmark 3200 like the one i have, but doesn't have native driver support for your Lexmark version.

I had Vista (still do)... went back to XP though. Too many problems with drivers. Not really missing ones.... most hardware is now covered with some kind of vista driver... but rather incomplete drivers. A lot of the drivers put out now are missing some features that the hardware puts out. I have a X-fi elite pro sound card for example... paid enough money for it, but some of the features like fine surround speaker balance is missing. My R-320 printer will no longer print dvd disks automatically, instead I have to bring up the print program and run it manually.... this list goes on

If Vista was a truly great program and not just an okay one, then I would put up with little things. But it's just that... an "okay" program. Nothing really truly great about it.... IMO, it's not much more than a sidestep from XP.

I Just did major upgrades on my machine (getting ready for the 64 bit era), and when 64 bit drivers are a bit more common, then I'll try again with Vista64.... but vista32... a bit of a waste.

Two words - chopped liver ;-)

I used to frequently run into problems associated with my heavy use of tabs (as later found out) which included but was not limited to right click quitting on me arbitrarily, not being able to launch new tabs from links or other programs, commands or windows failing to launch as well.

That issue seems to have become history now (knocks on wood) after a suggested registry editing - see below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\Windows

DWORD - %SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

Changed 3072 from above to 4096 & later to 5120 based on the tip.

Yeah 64bit anything for home pc users is more of a novelty at this point then anything else right now. I have Vista 64bit on my second hard drive, but it's mainly used to test programs on it. XP pro is my primary OS and will be for a long time. I find it more stable and a lot more compatible then Vista is at this point and until the bugs and compatibility issues are worked out in Vista, then I won't consider making a jump to Vista as my primary OS anytime soon.

True... for the moment anyway. But Sony Vegas (video editor) is coming out with a 64bit version later this year.

I have just upgraded to a Q6600 quad core... I figure with this and the new Sony Vegas 64 bit.... the video editing should fly like the wind!

I just installed Vista Ultimate this morning. It runs suprisingly well, installed in about 45 minutes. I do hate the UAC thing, though. I have that disabled now. It seems real fast to me. I thought it would use all 512MB of RAM in the system, but only uses about 384MB on idle. The Windows Sidebar is great! Overall, I like it. It would be nice if I could get it to run on fewer resources, but I guess it takes more resources to run a newer OS.

I didn't bother enabling Aero Glass because I thought that the system I installed Vista on was under specs for it. I also thought it would turn on automatically if it was above minimum specs. But I decided to see if I could turn it on anyway (besides, I have a new nVidia 256MB graphics card). It worked. And it is absolutely amazing IMO. It did hog an extra 150MB of my memory, though. But it is a great tasty piece of eye candy.
