After installing vista, I never got the option to boot from "previous windows versions". I installed Vista on partition C, but I also have WinXP on partition D....which I now cannot boot from. I have installed Vista on another older machine and had no problems booting from "previous windows versions". Now looks like I am screwed...I can access all the data on D, but unable to boot to it. I hope someone knows a workaround to be able to boot my D drive under XP.

Err.......mattie - don't you think that is equivalent to sending this dude out of the skillet straight into the fire?.............LOL
Try VistaBootPro or EasyBCD 1.5

well, bcedit is what comes with vista, guides are plenty ...
although a GUI has its perks :-)
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Thanks for suggestions. I have EasyBCD v1.52 installed, but can't seem to get my WinXP partition on "D" to be recognized. It seems that my boot.ini that was on "C" got deleted along with ntldr and that's my problem. How to reconstruct a boot.ini that would point to my D drive.

Then I'm afraid your XP on d drive is toast.
I have found that the BEST way to run dual boot is to load an OS onto c drive, then do a disk image. Then wipe the drive. Load the next OS onto c drive, then install your disk image of the previous OS on D drive, change the boot.ini to reflect the proper partition on that OS. Now use a third party boot manager.
You now have 2 COMPLETELY independent OS’s that you can move to any partition that you wish, (just change the boot.ini file). Each one will think it’s on c drive at the time it is running, and you can lose one COMPLETELY without affecting the other.

Yes, you are right, I'm going to have to re-install XP. Maybe I can do a repair install and keep all my settings. Do you know if I must first format C to get rid of Vista then do a repair install on D or can I just do a repair on D and leave C alone for now?

I *THINK* you are now in uncharted territory. I would not be surprised however if you end up having to remove vista and start over again completely.
Give us a call back and let us know how it works!

Thanks blackbill, I had to remove Vista from C and install XP there after format. However, I was able to salvage my XP on D and get it to boot just like before, by monkeying around with the boot.ini. I'm not exactly sure how it did it, but I am now back to where I was before I had this bright idea in the first place. Now, I will look for other ways to "dual boot" with Vista and XP.
Cheers!

I dual boot with XP and Vista with XP on the C drive and Vista on another partition.
I thought you're supposed to have the older OS on the C drive.

!I thought you're supposed to have the older OS on the C drive.!
nope, you're not :-)

"I thought you're supposed to have the older OS on the C drive."
There's no rule about that. You can have any OS on any drive. In fact you can multiple OS's on the same drive if you wish. But to be COMPLETELY flexible, you have to start using a third party boot manager (and IMO, a separate boot manger is always the best way)

Hallelujah!
I finally figured it out. After monkeying around with VistaBootPro v3.1 for several days, I was finally able to get Vista and WinXP to "dual boot" with a menu at startup to choose between them. I just needed the right files in the right places and by trial-and-error was able to figure it out. Of course, I already had back-ups of everything important before tinkering. I just can't figure out why I was never given the "choice" to boot Vista or WinXP after installing Vista on C.

care to describe how you did this? I usually dual boot and want to learn before I make the same mistakes you did. I usually have winXPPro on 2 partitions for emergency purposes and I just install on the other drive and it automatically created the "boot menu" for me.
Also, do you know how to edit the text in that boot menu (choice of OS after the BIOS screen). Sya for example I wanted to change it from "Windows XP Professional" to "WinXP March 2007" so I can easily discern each OS/drive. I tried in notepad (boot.ini.bak) but it changed it back after reboot.
