How do I schedule Vista defrag to defrag ONLY drive C:? Whenever I start defrag it goes through all the partitions and the external disk and the XP disk and it takes forever.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

You cannot. For Vista desktop defrag it's all drives & partitions or nothing.

The workaround is to either do it from the command prompt
(CLICK ME), or opt for one of the free third party defragmenters (LOOK HERE).

Thank you XPUser... I have bookmarked the "CLICK ME) page... there are a lot of useful utilities there. I have Diskeeper" but for the life of me I cannot get it to work on Vista. Other users have no difficulty with it but I'm blowed if it will work for me. I like the look of AusLogics meantime.

Thanks again.

If you install SP1 RC1, then you will be able to schedule whichever drive/drives you wish to defragment separately.

Other than this, there are standalone defragmenters as advised above by the reputable forum member.

Thank you suatcini... I guess I'll wait for the official release of SP1 next year, in the meantime it's AusLogics (not to bad really).

Auslogics does its job very very quickly. Vista's own defragmentation engine takes very very long to defragment.

For these reasons, I stopped using Auslogics because I do not think it does a job of defragmenting in such a short time. And I rarely use Vista's own defragmenter because I do not often install-uninstall software to cause fragmentation.

I also installed SP1 RC1 and it runs well.
