I'm in the process of purchasing a new wireless laptop with Vista, and want to connect it to my desktop (which is partitioned with w2k and xp pro) via a wireless router. A Dell Rep. informed me that i would have to purchase Vista Ultimate ($150 more) to make that work. Does any one have any input or way around this situation. Thanks, vandal

Connecting the router to my cable internet provider, then my desktop to the router, and accessing the internet with my wireless laptop via the wireless router.

The Dell rep you spoke with really doesn't know what he/she is talking about (most reps don't anyway because they are trained to go by scripts only). You don't have to have Vista Ultimate to do that - any editions of Vista will work just fine.

P.S. For the sake of clarity, think of your wireless router as wireless access point.

The problem might be, however, that the OP has w2k and xp pro on his desktop. For connecting when both computers run some version of Vista works fine, but it's more complicated when one of the computers is not running Vista. I don't know that Vista Ultimate is required, however.

I have W2K on one computer, XP on another and vista 64 bit on another and vista 32 bit on two wireless laptops all working fine with each other and able to connect to the internet. however with vista anything you want to share with the other computers on the local network either has to be put in the public folder or you have to have a secondary harddrive that is set to be shared as vista is designed not to let other computers have access to the "C" drive files as a security measure.

Know what's really fun to do with Vista? Trying to get Vista to use a networked printer.
Me: I'm an Administrator, and UAC is disabled, right?
Vista: Aye.
Me: Can you see the XP box?
Vista: Aye.
Me: You can see the shared printer?
Vista: Aye.
Me: And you have the drivers for said printer?
Vista: Aye.
Me: You're able to modify said printer's settings?
Vista: Aye.
Me: And you can print a test page?
Vista: Aye.
Me: Well, let's just add this shared printer to our printer devices then.
Vista: ACCESS DENIED.
