Subject: Vista BSoD problem
OS: Vista Ultimate x64
CPU/Ram: Athlon X2/4GB XMS DDR2
Model/Manufacturer: Built by Moi.

Well, Vista and problems seems to be a common theme, not for me, atleast until now. When I first built the computer I am currently running and installed Vista Ultimate x64 I had no problems and it ran perfect for a good 8 months.

Long story short, I let my new girlfriend use the computer i'v never before let anyone use and she managed to infect it with all manner of trojans/spyware/worms/you name it.

So, I take the "easy" option, backup my important data, format and reinstall.

This is where it stopped being so easy.

Reinstalled from my Vista Ultimate DVD, fresh install on my freshly formatted RAID0 primary drive.

Vista installs fine, so i do the usual thing and run windows update, first update corrupts windows and it BSoDs on every boot, so I do a repair, no luck, reinstall fresh, and update without said problematic update, BSoDs again, so I do another fresh install, this time i managed to get all updates installed including SP1 but every time Vista tries to install a big update, the type where it goes to the login screen and says installing updates step X of X - XXX% complete, it will install and attempt to shutdown, I get a black screen for 5 minutes or so then suddnly BSoD with "KERNEL_DATA_IN_PAGE" Error.

So, sounds obvious to me, corrupted page file, so I disable the paging and delete the file, reenable restart etc etc and all is fine. Until the next update and i get the same error again. It's starting to become annoying that the only time i ever reboot my PC (It lives in S3 hybrid sleep) i get BSoDs about kernel data in the page file.

Any suggestions on other solutions? And possibly why my fresh install (even before updates) has caused so many problems. THe disc is an original, i have used it only once before to instal the first time and it has been in it's case since, not a scratch in sight and in perfect condition.

Why is it being a pain now?

The only hardware change to my PC is an upgrade from 2GB XM2 DDR2 TwinX to 4GB (two sets of the aforementioned)

Thanks

First, I would run a test on the RAM. Second, I would try disabling the Raid 0 and see if you still have the same problem, Third, You might also want to check that the SATA mode is set to IDE and not AHCI.

I would delete all partitions on all the HDDs, run a wipe disk program and then reinstall partitions and format. (I'm thinking a virus worked its way into the boot/partition records).

I would most certainly get rid of the RAID until this is sorted out.

As hinted above, installing Vista with only the most basic components needed should help you isolate the issue ... try that.

I had a similar situation and it turned out to be memory.

very occasionally on XP I get a kernel_data_in_page error and most sources point to bad memory. i've had this memory module in this here laptop since i bought it, roughly 2 years ago now, so it's feasible.

i reckon you may have bad memory. test it.

The problem seems to have resolved itself over time and hasnt occured for a while.

One point I will mention though, I have tested the RAM and its all fine, but, if I have quick-boot on, where it doesnt test the RAM just lists it, the POST hangs just as it's about to pop the RAM amount message up.

Turned quick boot off and i just hit esc to skip mem check, boots and has been running fine for a month or two now. Strange.
