Can anyone help... ? I recently installed Vista on my newish laptop, and it's been running smoothly (if a little slowly) for a while. But today, for some reason, it started making some kind of beep or ding or other annoying sound at every possibly opportunity. It was like riding Santa's bloody sleigh. So I went into Sound in Control Panel and set it to No sounds. But now it still make the default beep when, from Word, I open up a document and go into the file system. Each time I select a file or folder, it makes the sound (not when I open it, just when I select it - but it makes navigating around exceedingly annoying...).

I'd buy several (notional!) beers for anyone who can help me with this...

Thanks in advance...

Is there a reason why you haven't tried System Restore since as you stated - the problem started today?

As it happens, yes there is! I tried System Restore yesterday, for another problem, which turned out just to be a problem with a piece of software that won't run properly under Vista at all. It didn't work! It went through all the motions, and then said that it hadn't worked properly. Said I should choose another restore point, which I haven't done yet. Only two are listed - both on the same day.

The next thing you might want to do is uninstall your sound drivers & reinstall it.
