Subject: Vista Aero effectsOS: xp pro/vista home premiumCPU/Ram: 512mbModel/Manufacturer: acer |
Comment: hi, i have just installed vista home premium on my acer travelmate 3201xmi and have found i don't have the aero glass effects running, in rc1 and rc2 it worked fine with aero. The graphics card is a ATI Mobbility Radeon 9700 64MB the driver is WDDM and in Proformance information it gives graphics 2.5 and gaming graphics 3.6. Can I turn Aero Glass on?

Reply: (edit)I don't think that you have enough RAM(512 MB) or video RAM(64 MB) to turn Aero Glass on. Besides that, you should have at least 1 GB RAM for Vista Home Premium.

Reply: (edit)"512mb of ram is enough and so is 64mb video ram."-true, but the article cited by XpUser does recommend what I had suggested.

Reply: (edit)The video memory is okay .... provided the system is not for gaming. But kx5m2g is correct in stating that 512MB of RAM is inadequate for Vista, in fact it is pitiful & sooner than later you will find out why. However, you can save yourself the inevitable aggravation by upgrading the RAM as soon as you possibly can & might I recommend 1.5GB to 2GB.

Reply: (edit)Since the system came pre-loaded with XP & you seem to have gotten by with 512MB RAM, I can see why the slightest suggestion of a memory upgrade seems like an effrontery on our part, but Vista is by far better at managing memory intelligently than XP was & requires at least 1GB for desirable performance. Rest assured & make no mistake, you are under no pressure to do anything, we are just being forthright with you & we really have nothing to gain or lose either way .... who knows your machine may not even have any empty SODIMM slots available at this time .... thus leaving you with one or more redundant modules in the event of a memory upgrade ;-) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919183 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pr... Good luck!
