Comment: Well then... the search engine here and on Google doesn't give too much information on VPC07. I have installed it on an Ultimate box I have and I have installed XP pro th the VPC, I also installed SP2 so that it is nice and up to date. My problems are these: 1.) It will not see my modem which is a USB one but by using a USB/Serial Adapter I can also use a serial modem... it sees neither however. 2.) The roblem related to the above is that I have 30 days to register the installation and I can' get onto the net. 3.) I can;t get Quicken to restore from the backup I keep on a cd via my CDROM drive. It sees the drive alright but it will persist in reading the last ISO/CD that was read there. From this point of view it is time consuming and it would probably be better to dual boot XP on my other box. Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Reply: (edit)You don't normally use the modem that way. Let the main os run the modem and the vm will see the network with it's own nic card. It has a nat server in it. You can always call ms. Press F5 and try that. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Reply: (edit)Thankyou Jefro but you are talking to the "not so bright" here. How do I achieve making VM use the modem on the main PC. I realise that there must be some networking here but I have absolutely no idea how to achieve this. Unhappily the VM help file does not give any ideas and as I said a pretty extensive Google search and a search here have not given me much help. Can you elaborate please? Regards Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Reply: (edit)Set you main os to open a web page. That is log on or dial in or whatever you need to do to access your ISP. Then go to the vm and try to open a page. If you let dhcp work it should be opening. You may have to allow in firewall settings if you are a non-ms. Normally zonealarm will auto setup for vpc by may ask to allow. Reply: (edit)I have tried logging on to the web with the host and then tried accessing the net through VPC and it does not connect. What does this bit of your post mean: "If you let dhcp work it should be opening." Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Reply: (edit)Tonight I tried a different tack... I opened Vista Ultimate, then logged on to the net THEN opened XP and attempted a log-0n and it worked... all automatic. Sometimes I make it hard for myself but thank you to all who took the time to answer my thread. Regards Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the update. VM programs have a nat or router service built into the program. It is like having a virtual router so to speak. The VM program knows that your client vm needs to have a way to connect to the main OS. In VPC there are three or four ways it allows you to do that. See the VPC help pages on that. Might be under network or something like that. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10
