Video Call Problem

Hi, hope someone can help.
We have just had a video call with some friends in Oz using Windows Live messenger.
The problem is they can see and hear us fine but we cannot see or hear them at all!
We can see our own image in the bottom frame but in the frame that should contain their image is a picture of a webcam with a red X on it.
They can see both themselves and us on screen.

Typically Australian ISP upload speeds are a quarter of their downloads.
Most are on a speed of 1500, 512 or 256, higher speed connections are still in the minority due to very high cost.
So upload speed would be 256, 125, and 64.
Also some areas can not get the higher speed for techical reasons.
So if you are not getting an image at all, it could be due to slow upload speed, but not getting sound as well could be a different problem.
I recall years ago when I only had dialup, I could have a conversation on that slow speed.
