Well here's a new one for me. I'm working on my parents' laptop. At some point in time (it was a work laptop used at a company), it had proxy software on it. It has long been removed.

It turns out that the user agent string on IE7 is reporting "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)".

I'm going to assume this is somehow related to the old proxy software. I have tried changing it in the registry (it actually shows up properly in the registry), have tried the Microsoft tool that reverts the IE7 agent to IE6, all to no avail. It doesn't change it.

Normally I wouldn't care, but all the visited websites (Yahoo, for example) show up as the googlebot optimized site...where it basically looks nothing like the actual site. :)

Now here's the other strange part. Firefox was not modified, and is showing the correct string. This is only happening to IE. Firefox shows, "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032609 Firefox/3.0.8 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)".

Any ideas on this? I was thinking on upgrading it to IE8 then downgrading back to IE7, but if there's an easier way...

Thanks guys!

Just to update this. Installing [and uninstalling] IE8 did nothing to solve the problem.

Nobody has any ideas on this?

And disregard. I did a really deep search of the registry and found the keys that were altered. Weird because they weren't showing up last time I did the search.

Anyway, all fixed. :)
