Subject: USB Mouse/Keyboard no workeyOS: Vista Ultimate 32-bitCPU/Ram: C2D 6300/1GBModel/Manufacturer: home-built HTPC |
Comment: Hello all- I have an HTPC with an intel DG33TL motherboard, and all of the sudden the mouse/keyboard combination has stopped working. The computer boots up but I can't get past the login screen. Here's some details: 1. I can still get into the BIOS and screw around in there, so I know it's not the keyboard itself. 2. I have tried different USB devices, all have the same problem. I plugged in the bad keyboard into another computer, it worked fine. 3. My motherboard doesn't have any PS/2 ports so I can't use that instead. 4. Since the keyboard works up until vista boots up, I can get into the F8 menu and tried last known good configuration, safe mode, and safe mode with networking. No workey. 5. I think the USB devices actually lose power somewhere in the boot process, since the wireless keyboard/mouse receiver light stops blinking when pressing keys. This happens at the same time the windows vista loading screen (with progress bar) shows up. 6. I tried remote desktopping into the HTPC (while it's at the login screen) from another computer on the network. Told me the computer couldn't be found. I could ping it OK but the response came from a mac address instead of an ip address, which I thought was strange. 7. I CAN access the file system using the \\htpc\c$ share across the network. Am I going to have to do a complete reinstall of Vista, or do I have other options here? Thanks in advance! -SN

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the reply. I've tried all the ports on front and several of the ports on back. I may consider digging up a USB expansion card to put in there, but since I can't log-in I'm not sure if Vista would even install the drivers. Thanks, SN

Reply: (edit)"...but since I can't log-in I'm not sure if Vista would even install the drivers." It's worth a try. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Windows does start installing devices before log-on, but I could be wrong. Make sure Jesus is your Saviour!
