Is there a way to override the Vista install program and install to a usb drive? My dad's laptop is XP HE so virtual pc 2007 doesn't work, and 2004 won't work, so my only alternatives are to install to usb or repartition the drive. However, I don't want to mess up my dad's laptop because his job depends on it, and I am using the vista .iso with a virtual disc mounter.

I don't know how sensitive the laptop is to your Dad's work - but if he works in a corporate environment, you probably don't want to overly customize the notebook, but then again you never know.

'I don't want to mess up my dad's laptop because his job depends on it' ... and subsequently your pocket money.

you don't want to jeopardize all that because 'mess up' is what most likely is going to happen.

using a 'virtual disc mounter' (like daemon tools) will only work for upgrading an existing XP installation.

Daemon tools IS what I use and the laptop is used for GPS. So can I somehow fool virtual pc 2004 into letting me install vista? The laptop ittslf only has 300 some mb RAM, it lets me start to install, but virtual pc won't (even with a one-gig paging file)

min req. for vista is 512 MB ram ... say u have 384 mb ram and you run a virtual machine you need at least a 128 mb for the host (daddy's laptop in your case) to run which leaves you with a maximum of 256 for your VM. and no, there is no way to fool VPC 2004 to run vista virtualized.

to get anywhere near a decent performance you should have at least a processor beyond 2 GHz, 1 GB ram and a full directx 9 compliant graphics card with 128 mb ram.
