I ran the Upgrade Advisor, and it recommended Home Basic even though I'd like to get Home Premium (just like the look of the Aero desktop). Wondering maybe if my video card would need to upgraded for HP? system specs are:

Tagan 600W Modular PSU
Asus M2N-SLI motherboard w/ Soundmax HD Audio
Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB Kingston HyperX
2x WD 160GB SataII HDD's (Raid1)
160GB WB External USB HDD
Biostar GeForce 6600GT PCIE w/ 256MB*
Liteon DVD-ROM & DVD (+DL) Burner
Crystalfontz CFA-635 USB LCD Module
Leadtek TV2000XP Expert TV Tuner Card (Found Vista drivers for this after the UA stated that it'd need updating.)
Apevia (Aspire) X-Discovery Case
Epson C-80 Printer
Linksys BEFSR41 Router / Verizon DSL Modem
Ben-Q FP71G+S 17" LCD Monitor
Compaq FS-740 17" CRT (Standby)

* I'm thinking I may need a 7000-series card for Aero? I'm not a huge gamer but just wanted something adequate for playing The Sims 2 w/o being overkill.

My main system is about a step behind what you listed above & it runs Ultimate just fine. In this regard I would say to take that Upgrade Advisor's report with a pinch of salt.

BTW, avoid Vista Home Basic at all cost - it is completely pointless IMHO, because for a few dollars more you can get something far better & more useful.

I think what you are reading is what the Vista Readiness states it feels would be best. Check to see if your system has the proper Ramn, Hard Disk Space, Video Card, etc. to work with each of the different flavors of Vista. Mine said home basic but it also said my processor, ram, hard drive, and video card would work with Vista and even take advantage of the Aero desktop which Basic won't. I agree-Don't bother with basic. Go for the Vista HOme Premium.

Thanks for the replies guys. I read, also, that Home Basic was a waste. As for the requirements, I think my CPU & RAM are adequate. The video card info I could find said just, "a Direct-X 9 compatible w/ a minimum of 128MB." So, I should be OK there, as well. One other thing I've read is that the 32-bit version would be easier to find drivers for. So that's probably what I'll install.

I'm running Ultimate with a 32MB graphics card.
Seems fine to me, of course I don't know how things would look with the recommended minimum 128MB
