Hi to all,
My HP Pavilion laptop works under VISTA 32 bits Home Premium.
I consider upgrading to VISTA 32 pro, to overcome certain restrictions of VISTA home.
Supposing I acquire an installation DVD, is it possible to upgrade the OS without destroying everything else, or will it re-install from scratch ?
Many thanks for your help - claude
What is a PRO version ??

Hi itguru,
What I mean with "VISTA pro" is in fact VISTA business.
Many, many thanks for your very relevant quotation. I think it will give an answer to all my questions.

Correlating Vista to XP, Home Premium is actually more like the "Pro" flavor, while Home Basic could be compared to XP Home.
OOC, could you reveal a little bit more about these "Home Premium" restrictions that you've run into?
Are you talking about the ShadowCopy, System Backup & Recovery or the Fax & Scan features. Those are the two main features that distinguish Vista Business from Home Premium. Aside from them, the only other thing is the Parental Control options that is absent in Vista Business but you get with Vista Home Premium.

You also get some multi media features in Vista Home Premium that you don't get in Vista Business. Go to the MS website to look them up.

Hi Sabertooth,
You are right, my perception of VISTA "business" (most often called VISTA Pro in French speaking countries) was more or less that of XP Pro compared to XP Home.
I am experiencing various issues with VISTA Home Premium, including gorgeous BSOD screens when I try to install SP1, as well as few others.
The upgrade table included in the KB article quoted by itguru told me that I would have to perform a clean install to migrate from Home Premium to business version. No way !
So, I'll go on walking on 3 legs with my current version, unless I decide to upgrade to the "ultimate" version, supposing it is worth the nice amount of money needed to purchase it (your opininon ?).
Still many thanks for your input - Claude

On my machine, BSOD has faded into oblivion on the Vista side. But not so much on the XP side, I still get it every once in a while.
If you are getting BSODs .... the first thing you want to do is use a precess of elimination to narrow this to either hardware or software. You might want to start tracking when & what you seem to be doing whenever this occurs.
If this is happening whenever you try to install SP1, my guess is, there could be some driver on that machine that is incompatible with SP1.
Before you give up though, be advised that M$ has had a free support channel available for SP1 ... see below links for more details - depending on your country.
