Specs: Windows Vista, 2 GB
Persistent Black screen that has occasionally returned to normal, only to go black again. Could a very bad Trojan, for example, gotten into the BIOS? Is there a safe BIOS update that could be downloaded without high risk?

While theoretically possible it is highly unlikely that the BIOS is infected by malware. The infection would have to target a BIOS that was very similar to yours. Flashing a BIOS carries with it an element of risk. If anything goes wrong, which can happen even if you do everything right, your system could become unbootable. In many cases the only recovery is physical replacement of the BIOS chip.

You should consider a BIOS infection a last resort.
