A few weeks back due to a massive virus, I nuked my laptop. I reinstalled everything (I thought) with all of my installation CD's. Since then I have not been able to burn DVD's (Previously not a problem.) I can burn CD's and Data disks just fine. The drive reads DVD's, CD's and Data just fine. Device Manager says that the device is working properly. I used Microsoft Fix-it it says it is fixed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers.I have repaired my O/S. I have even sat on the phone with Dell for hours. Nothing seems to be working. I use ConvertX to DVD, to burn and also Nero. Can anyone shed some light on this? I do not believe that my drive is shot, since everything else seems to be working. HELP!

Does that include the drivers CD supplied by Dell when you purchased Inspiron 1720?

Yes, drivers were included. I reinstalled those as well. I also meant to add to my previous question that the "device description" has it as CD/ROM. I do believe that the previous description said DVD/CD RW. It is almost like it is not recognizing that it is there, but yet it is. I am really stumped.

If TSST drive is not the original drive supplied with your Inspiron, try download * install software designed for that particular drive at the link below.

This is going to sound like a crazy question. I should know this. however, is it possible I have the wrong driver? And how would i find out what it is. The specs that i have, I got from Dell, and assumed that they were correct. I know that my drive is a dual layer drive and is DVD/CD RW but everywhere I have checked the numbers don't match up.

Okay- I found out today that the Dell Inspiron 1720 has a proprietary drive. Obviously when I nuked my computer this was wiped out. Any suggestions on how to get this back up and running. I am thinking that with this gone this is why my DVD player will not burn. I have looked on the Dell website and it has nothing about this drive. Please HELP! I need to be able to burn!
