Trying to restore Dell laptop factory setting

January 27, 2010 at 08:49:23
Specs: Windows XP, 2.699 GHz / 759 MB
I'm trying to restore a friends Dell laptop computer to factory settings using the restore partition, but having no luck. I followed all directions by hitting F8 before boot, and I can get into the system recovery options, but the option to restore to factory dell settings is not present. The restore partition is present, and filled with about 4 gigs of data but still cannot figure out how to restore. I did some searching on the net and found out that there is suppose to be a file named factory.wim that is the actual image of the resore disk or something like that, and that should be located on the restore parition, but after searching for that particular file, it is apparently not present. Being that it is a friends computer I don't know if they accidentially deleted it or not, or if i misread something and that file is not what I assumed it to be, but whatever the case, I cannot restore to factory dell settings. On another note... the restore partition does contain several other folders such as a Windows folder (with most of the data), a Program Files folder, and a few other folders which are empty. You can also browse through that partition and add/edit/delete files as if it was not protected or hidden. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to restore this PC back to factory settings? Also, this computer does NOT have a CD drive, so getting a restore disk and reinstalling doesn't seem like it would be an option. Thanks

F8 is just the standard method of bringing up the 'Advanced Startup Options' built in to all XP installations.

Try <Ctrl> + <F11> when you see the Dell splash screen.

I tried <ctrl> <F11> and that does nothing. This is a VISTA system and I even found the original manual online and that says to press <F8>. The screenshots in that manual even match my screen, but the option for a DELL restore is not available. I'm figuring that it has to be something with the restore partition. Is there anyway i can restore the restore partition???
