I think you may find this M$KB interesting in that it tells us how to troubleshoot Vista.

First you enable half of the services just to determine if the problem return.

Then enable half of the startup items.

Is this the way we should tell everyone to follow ?

It's a method.

They're basically doing an approach like if you were faced with the task to "guess this number between 1-100". You guess 50, and you're told that's low or high. If high, 25. If that's low, guess 37, etc. Statistically, that will be more efficient than than guessing 1, then 2, then 3, etc.

You could argue that more info could be obtained by examining event logs and error messages, but I don't think the purpose is to say you should do those things or this method, it's just saying if you want, here's a strategy that might expedite troubleshooting processes.

"Enough, enough bowing down to disillusion!

The ripple effect is too good not to mention.
If you’re not affected, you’re not paying attention!"

Yep, it's just a way to narrow things down. I've suggested the same sort of thing on W9x using msconfig.

It all depends on who is doing it - the more knowledgeable would select the most likely culprits rather than a random 50%.

MS is doing the correct approach. They are giving you detail info on how to troubleshoot so that you can narrow it down to what's causing the problem.
