I've been using a 250 gB Eagle external HDD for about 3 months now with no problems. I used it today for about an hour and when I tried accessing it after that it froze and left me with the message that it needed to be formatted to be able to be read. I have over 200 gB of data, most of it important. Is there anyway to format w/o losing the data?

That was a no-go, tried both ways and then even tried to get the HDD to register on an XP, but it was still read as RAW and unformatted. I guess I'll reformat and try and recover. What are the chances/quality of recovering files after reformat?

... can you hook it up to another pc to see if it'll open?

************************************************************
(/edit) for xp

... this seems to be a common xp problem...

... a system restore may solve this(?)

... this is the way I do it....

... tap "F8" key @ boot-up select "safe mode" using arrow keys [press ENTER]

... once in safe mode click "no" on the "pop-up" that should guide you to system restore

... select a restore point by altering the restore calendar to a time when the pc was working fine.

... another method is "start" all programs> accessories> system tools > system restore!

... might work if you go back far enough

... whoops you have Vista... this is the way for Vista system restore thats the trouble looking @ too many posts!

Yeah, nothing is really working. My HP's Hard disk just failed...and I assumed malware, but scans with nod32, avast, spy sweeper, spybot, AND Avira, didn't catch anything. I decided to bite the bullet and reformat the External so I could salvage whats left on my Laptop's Hard Disk, but while reformatting the HP got unplugged and ended up shutting down mid-reformat. Now the External will hit 2% reformat after about 20 min, and then nothing from then on.

Sys restore didnt help and Now I'm out 500+ giB of data.

Finals in 2 weeks, wow this couldnt have come at a worse time

... sounds like you may have to open up the external caddie and hook-up the harddrive to a desktop ... I would run a data salvage cd on it myself....

... once data is backed up to another device... FDisk then format it!
