Hey guys what's up? I am considering purchasing a new Dell Laptop with a Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1 64 Bit operating system. I read somewhere that XP pro files can only be transferred onto Business or Ultimate Vista. Can anyone validate this information? I have a Dell computer with XP Professional and I don't want to purchase another and not be able to transfer all my stuff onto the new one. I did a quick search but was unsuccessful in finding anything specifically related to my issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

When you mean "transfer files" what do you mean? Do you just mean documents, music, pictures and things like that or do you mean actual OS settings like drivers, user accounts, etc.?

Im really not concerned with OS settings like drivers, user accounts, etc...actually, I only want to transfer pics, music, word docs, and software. Particularly a softeware my wife uses to maintain her business website...thanks! Any further suggestions are greatly appreciated!

While pics, music, word docs would transfer ok, software would need to be reinstalled. As to your wife's business software, check out Microsoft compatability utility on your XP computer, it will give you a list of programs on your XP install that are incompatible. If it lists that program as incompatible, you may be able to get it running in XP compatability mode. You could also post a question specifying the program name and version number to see if anyone has been able to use it under Vista.

I was also curious about the transfer process. My current computer has Windows XP. A friend has a Vista64 system that I am thinking of buying.
What I want to know is how do I transfer everything over to the vista computer? Will it take my outlook file, favorites and my docs? What about programs? Can I use my WinXP Photoshop install disk for Vista64?
