I'm working on a customer's brand new Toshiba laptop with Vista home premium and SP1. He lives out in the sticks and has to use dial-up for Internet.

The problem is that it connects to his ISP fine, and Windows mail can send and receive fine, but he cannot browse the Internet with either IE7 or FireFox. Sounds like DNS problems, right?

I've checked everything. IP Config shows IP address as well as DNS numbers. From the command prompt, I can ping some web addresses, but not others, but it will not "go" to any web page.

Searching the net I have found several people with this problem, but no solutions. I have downloaded Vista drivers from Toshiba and everything else I can think of.

Any ideas?

Hi Musky

I am using Toshiba satellite A215-S4757 that also came with Vista Home Premium. Would you mind telling me what's the spec of the customer's notebook? Also how are you diagnosizing the connection - Are testing it with broadband or dialup?

Does he have KB937143 installed? And is Norton installed on the machine or any third party firewall conflicts?

Hi Guys!

Saber first:

There is NO A/V or third party firewall installed. There was a trial of Norton that hadn't been setup yet that I removed. Turning Windows Firewall off has not affected the problem. I believe the update you mentioned was replaced by SP1, but I may be wrong, either way, Windows update says he is up to date. The machine connects fine both with Ethernet DSL (LAN) or any wireless network. It also connects fine with dial-up, just will NOT surf the net!

XPUser:

It is an "AMD Athlon 64 (Athlon 2X) With 1GB of RAM, model Satellite A215-S5829"

As I've said, It's only 10 days old and I have been to the Toshiba site and downloaded the latest drivers for the modem. I have uninstalled and re-installed the modem. It sends and receives emails great. I can ping SOME websites, but not others. which is strange. I can post a few links to other posts where people are having this same problem if needed.

Here's one with the exact same problem, but their "solution" did not work in this case:

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email...

One thing to note:

When I do the "netsh int ip reset reset.log" I get an "echo request denied" error.

I'm afraid the other links I have are on my home system, so I can't post them until later.

OK but when you get home please add the other link too so I can review the whole thread at once. Deal?

Hi Musky,

I referenced KB937143 because it is/was notorious for causing the browser issues, hoping that if it did you could yank it off.

Secondly, who is his ISP?

Is this an AOL type of connection?

Can you setup the connection manually & not without the ISP's UI?

Have you tried another dial-up ISP?

Hey Saber,

No it's not an AOL type connection, just a small ISP (reachone) whose "techs" are pretty much out of their league with this one, so have been of no help. The fact that his email works fine is enough to convince them it's not their problem

I have manually created the connection several times, with the same results.

I haven't tried a different ISP because I really don't have one to try (who still has dial-up?) lol

It really seems like some kind of DNS error that only affects the dial-up connection.
