is it possible to disable vistas thumbnail views for folders only?
i dont like the folder content preview, but i still want to be able to see jpegs, etc, but all i can find is the option for icons or thumbnails

Try:
Click the Organize button on any folder, Select Folder and Search Options Click the View tab, Check the Always show icons, never thumbnails checkbox. Click OK

yeh, thats what i done, but i want to see jpegs as thumbnails instead of icons, i only want the folders to display as icons

Only other option I can think of is to Customize the folders.
Right click on a folder and click on Properties. Click Customize tab. Click Change Icon button. Select an icon and click OK.
It is my understanding that if you change the folder icon, the folder will no longer show a thumbnail preview of it's content. It will show your icon instead.
