Hey all,
I'm thinking about ordering the Vista RC1 DVD, as I will soon be getting a DVD drive (preferably a burner).I ran the 'upgrade advisor' and it said I'm all good, except for my printer (no drivers) and my video card...no good for the Aero thing, but will still work for normal stuff.
I heard a rumour that I haven't been able to confirm that RC1 will cease functionality sometime in 2007, forcing the user to buy a final release. Is this true?
Any other notes? My specs are in my sig for reference.

But that`s o.k. because it`s a free download anyway.
Not being able to print could be a big pain in the butt though, unless you have your printer networked and can print from another machine.
You might want to consider a dual boot if you have enough hard drive space.

What do you expect from M$ - a free premium OS?
I didn't think so. So long as Windows isn't Open Source like those Linux distros, you've got to pay for your copy, if you want to use it beyond the preview period.
The concept is similar to a promotional magazine subscription. The plan is to let you enjoy the product just enough to get hooked, that way when they pull the plug, you'll likely consider or won't mind paying so you can keep using the product.

I Googled it, and in 11 pages of results (for "vista rc1 self destruct") not ONE result mentioned Vista and self destruct together. Aparently some other beta software have June 2007 'self destruct' dates, the OS itself does not.
Can someone please cite an article or scan a document, or SOMETHING that can verify this besides unverifiable information? I even popped onto a warez site to look for a self destruct canceller and none exists! I am starting to think this is a myth.

oh, one more thing. I also installed it on my machine which is an Athlon XP 2400. At the time I had 512 MB Ram which was o.k. but noticeably slow.
I have since upgraded to 1.25 Gig of Ram and it made a huge difference.

Wow haha in the time it took to write that I got two replies.
I have a Lexmark X816 USB printer. I'm assuming that some type of generic USB printer driver would do the trick. I know a friend who can write drivers (basically, recompile libraries in a compatible way) so I might go to him about that.
And I didn't think of dual boot...I could, I have over 100GB free. Does Vista use the same revision of NTFS as XP?

I did a Google Advanced search with Microsoft.com as the domain and the serach criteria was "vista rc1" without the quotation marks. Search took .29 seconds.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx was the very first hit and it shows:

Time-limited software
Windows Vista RC1 is time-limited, pre-release software that will expire on June 1, 2007.
End of quoteRegards,

Here`s your proof.

Here`s a blurb from that page

OK, sorry folks...guess I should have searched directly on the MS site...could have saved some time on your parts at least.
RC1, therefore, looks like a really stupid idea. They want $3.75 plus shipping for me to get software that there is no point in using? The way I see it is this:
1. make it 100% free of charge, and have a time limit.
2. make it have a charge, and no time limit.
3. make it 100% free of charge, and have no time limit.Obviously, 3 is most preferable. 2 is most beneficial to MS, and 1 is most practical to everyone, at a small compromise here 'n there.
Anyway, no Vista for Kevin.
I won't pay their ridiculous prices for a new version, and I don't feel like bothering my friend to write a crack for the expiry thing. Thanks,

I know...but the $15 I will incur on a bandwidth overage will make it definitely not worth it.

Note: This is beta code and should not be used in a production environment or on a primary computer in the home. RC1 is intended for developers, IT professionals, and technology experts to continue or begin their testing of Windows Vista. Before you decide to use RC1, you should feel comfortable with installing operating systems, updating drivers, and general PC troubleshooting.

Unfortunately that is an expense dictated by the shabby relationship between you & your ISP and you can't stick that to M$...................LOL

If you have friends with Vista ask them to put it back to Classic Mode, it will look like XP and then you may feel you are not missing anything special LoL!

If you had ordered the original beta they they claim that they will now ship you the new DVD.
There are some advantages to a true pressed DVD. It might last longer, might be correct and looks pretty in the box.As with all Vista installs you get a real nice PE 2.0 to boot up xp and other machines and fix problems with a DVD that has plenty of drivers.
