When I started up the computer, I saw a black screen that said registry and something else. (It went by so fast I couldn't see it all.) When the computer started up, it said Configuring Updates for a few seconds. Then, I was able to log on. I have Windows Update set to notify me to install new updates, so is this message normal?

Do you also have Windows update set to actually INSTALL the updates automatically ? If so, then that message is probably normal. Personally, I prefer to never have Windows intsall anything automatically.

I have it set to notify me, but not to actually install automatically.

I would go back to Windows Update and let it search for updates. I would then install the recommended ones, but not necessarily the optional ones. By the way, do you have SP1 installed ? If not, you should be able to install it manually.

I checked for updates and there are only optional updates. I do have SP1. Also, I don't have it set to automatically download or install the updates. I just have it set to notify me to do this.

That just happened to me tonight when I booted up. I don't know about the black sceen as I was just coming in the room and it said configuring updates stage 1 of 3 or something then a minute later it went to the desktop. I have mine set like yours for updates also and earlie today I didn't update anything when I powered down so have no clue where it came from. Mary!
