I noticed there are over 20 items in task scheduler. Defrag, SynCenter, Media Center and many others. Is this normal for a Vista installation or is it setup that way by PC manufacturers? Is there an easy way to shut off all the tasks without doing it one by one? I would like control over when my hard drive is defragmented and updated not MS or anyone else.

diasble the task scheduler service. but this is not that easy, since it cannot be disabled from the services menu.
if you disable the task scheduler service (which has been proven to be sweet asset to lots of exploits in XP :-) you'll need a 3rd party dirk defragmenter because ms defrag will not work anymore. also keep in mind that some other programs (e.g. NAV) may depend on this service.
Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'
