I've had Vista for a few months now. And I have a lot of questions as I'm sure we all do. This is just the first of many.

Is there a place to change the size of space used by System Restore so I can restore to earlier dates like in earlier editions of Windows?

I chose to show restore points older then five days but it only went back 15 days. Granted I did set quite a few manual points as I dealt with issues. But I would prefer more options as Disk space is not an issue.

Still learning;

System Restore in the earlier version of Windows was more managable because of the GUI interface.

With Vista, M$ added shadow copy backup features to System Restore which necessitated the removal of the familiar GUI interface. The only way you can change the volume size is by running Vssadmin command from the command prompt.

Depending on how much storage space you have on your system - you may or may not need to even touch this setting. FYI. In Windows Vista: the default maximum space earmarked for Shadow Copy storage 15% of your HDD or 30% of its available free space -- whichever is smaller.

Some people have reported increasing space loss happening arbitrarily, hence the reason why it doesn't hurt (especially on such machines) to check & make sure that this maximum size is not without a cap .... else Vista's VSS going wild & consuming unnessary space that should otherwise be available on your HDD.

Finally, the size of independent restore points in XP is a lot smaller than what is typical with Vista. So if you are on a mission to shrink the space allocate to VSS - you may not have as much options available when you need to do a system restore - same goes for the "Previous Versions" file feature too.

Good luck!

Thanks XpUser and Sabertooth;
Good links and excellent information as usual.

It shows I have a max size of 43G which is 15% of my free hard drive space. I was thinking of increasing it but I think I'll leave it for now.

Sabertooth you weren't kidding when you said Vista needs more space for individual restore points. I didn't have all that many. But I'm most familiar with ME. Huge difference.

I saved the info as I'm sure to need it for someone sooner or later.

Once again thanks. Keep up the Good work;
RandyL
