Hi all, I haven't posted here in over 2 years. I dunno where the time went.
Anyway, I have a friend who got a Gateway 5404 desktop. It came with Vista Home Premium and she hates it! Some programs won't run with it, some games, etc.
So I'm trying to talk her through an install of XP Pro with SP2 (one cd total).
To make a long story short, it bluescreens during XP setup when she tries to do anything to the partition(s) on the drive. It's a SATA drive, 250 gig.
She bought a 320 gig SATA tonight and installed that and removed the 250. It shows 1 partition on the drive. If she tries to delete it, it bluescreens. If she presses Enter to install on it, it bluescreens.
I don't recall the error, but it's setupd.sys I *think* that has the problem.
My theory is that it needs a third-party SATA driver for this chipset. According to tech support, it sounded like the guy said it's a 945 Gigs superset. I think he meant 945G (and just thought G was gigs?). The closest I found to 945 Gigs superset is Intel 945G chipset. Seems fairly common but I can't find drivers from Gateway for it.
Support says the system won't run XP. I think they just don't support it, but there should be generic 945G drivers out there that would work, right?
The system has a floppy, and her other computer (laptop) has a floppy drive too. I believe the problem is a lack of SATA drivers with XP SP2 for this chipset.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same problem... I've searched Google up and down, I've searched Gateway... (GATEWAY SUCKS FOR DRIVERS) and Intel... I can't find a single driver download that supports the Intel (Coryville) 945G chipset, or my WD2500JD (250gb) drive. I have the same Gateway 5404 mentioned.
