stuck on boot screen vista

Specs: Windows vista, dual core 5 gig ram
im having a rather odd problem. recently i had the integrated video on my hp desktop go out, which caused my screen to become scrambled everytime i tried to boot up and since then i bought a vtx ati radeon 4650 with a gig of mem on it. Now atleast i can see the boot up menu but i cannot use my keyboard to access boot options. Theres nothing i can do except hold the power button down until it finally shuts off. Ive tried resetting the CMOS (if thats how you spell it) by taking the battery out of the motherboard and waiting for 5 minutes, but then it boots up past the main screen long enough for it to say "disk read error press ctrl+alt+delete to restart". Ive tried 2 dif HDD's and had the same exact results as well as switching all the wiring around to make sure i didnt have something hooked up wrong and nothing gets me past the boot up screen...if i could just use my keyboard i might be able to get past all this but i cant and im out of ideas. Anyone know a solution? Thanks.

yes i tried 3 keyboards and i know for a fact all of them work. I just took the hdd out of the computer im talking about and put it into another comp. It wont let me install a recovery partition or anything so i guess its junk. im going to try another hard drive i have here in a min and see where that goes
