I have received the following message when booting a Windows Vista Machine...
Stop: C0000218 Registry file failure. The registry cannot load the hive (file) \systemroot\system32\config\sam or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent or not writable.
Can anyone provide instructions to fix this. I have seen instructions for a Windows XP machine, but not for a Windows Vista machine. Thanks.

After booting with the Windows Vista Setup disk, I try to go into the repair feature, but no operating system shows up. Therefore, I cannot get to the Windows Vista Recovery Environment. Also, If I choose to go to the DOS prompt, I cannot access the c: drive, which is a WDC WD1600BEVS. Looks like you might have to load a device drive for that drive, to access the Recovery Environment, but I don't see a device driver for that drive. Any other thoughts on how to get the sam file replaced?

You can slave the drive to another machine & replace the file or try Trinity Rescue Kit; BartPE or a Linux "Live CD" with NTFS write support.
