Specs: Windows vista
My laptop is now only starting in safe mode even when i press start in normal mode. I have tried doing a restore and it is still doing the same thing. It wont let me do a recovery using either the recovery program in windows saying that there is a problem that caused it to stop working and when i try by pressing f11 it brings up an application error reading as follows: "The instruction at 0x771a2086 referenced memory at 0x9d0421bc. The memory could not be read. I am baffled as to what happened as 1 minute everything was fine and the next this? please any suggestions other than me depositing the blooming thing into the nearest bin?

Thank you

Borrow a vista or w7 dvd and boot to it.

See MS pages on how to run memory diagnostics from dvd.

Or get a linux cd with memtest and try it.

Can try to re-seat memory modules if they can be removed.

Start Windows in Safe Mode again and type in MSCONFIG in the run box. When the program opens, uncheck SAFE MODE option or check NORMAL STARTUP option and restart your notebook.

See if your notebook now starts in normal mode.

Please also see this for further info.

If still no go, then run CHKDSK /R /F and then SFC /SCANNOW in a command prompt window. CHKDSK will find and either repair or isolate the bad sectors on the hard disk and SFC will find and replace the damaged system files.
