Comment: Hello, Are there any rules for a customized start up wav in Vista? I have a few I've used for years in '98 and XP but there are two that just will not play if I apply them now I have Vista. Is there a length rule at all? Thanks for any help offered. Maureen.

Reply: (edit)Vista startup sound is not customizable. THIS article explain the many reasons for it. In the beginning M$ resisted adding options to turn it off. After we complained & complained M$ finally relented & gave us the option to only mute it by following the procedures outlined HERE Believe it or not, it took M$ 18 months to settle on the sound they want us to hear every time we turn on or reboot Vista PC. How M$ chose Vista Sounds i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)Well, I'VE been customizing it for the last 6 months with several of the sounds I used in XP. Just go into Control Panel / Personalization / sounds and change the Windows Logon to whatever you want. (Except, for me, two particular pieces.)

However there has been a hack to change the sound... I've used it and it works http://vistahelp.blogspot.com/2007/...

Reply: (edit)Hey blackbill - the hack is cool. Curious - are you dual booting Vista & XP as the hack recommended for best results? i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)Yeah... I'm set up for dual boot... although I must say i have now gotten quite used to Vista and hardly use XP anymore. But more to the point of this thread.... I used xp to do the alterations. Not sure if you can do it strictly through vista.... never tried.

Reply: (edit)Vista Log On or Vista Start Up, it doesn't matter for me, I get what I want - a sound playing as the computer loads up, exactly the same as in 95,98, & XP. I thank you for the help but it didn't solve my problem. As I'm really using the log on it MIGHT be a length issue. Thanks everyone.
